As our electricity generation is based more heavily on weather-dependent energy sources such as wind and solar power while changing the output pattern of electricity, the need for new balancing of the electricity system increases. On May 16 it was time for the spring’s final energy cluster meeting where the theme was energy storage. Hosts for the meeting were NODA Intelligent Systems AB who told about their business and offered lunch at Gourmet Grön.
Jens Brage, PhD, is Research Engineer at NODA. Jens told us about NODA’s activities and the projects he is working with. NODA provides the energy market with smart energy systems for energy optimization and energy efficiency services to create long-term and sustainable economic values with minimal environmental impact. The products they offer are Smart Heat Grid, a platform that optimizes the operational management of district heating networks, automatically and in real time, by calculating and managing virtual energy storage in real estate and Smart Heat Building, which uses sensors to continuously measure indoor temperature and apply a mathematical model to calculate the impact of different scenarios. NODA is also involved in the Flexible Heat and Power (FHP) project, which deals with the use of inertia in the power of heat readings for electrical flexibility.
We also listened to Alf Larsen, strategist and business developer from EON Energy Distribution. Alf talked about the possibilities and benefits of energy storage based on the challenges facing EON and other network companies with tough climate targets, increased urbanization, digitization, focus on efficiency and costs, and new power grid regulation. In addition, we learned more about the project with local energy systems such as EON driver in the small Skåne village of Simris. Watch the movie about Simris here: https://vimeo.com/241166148/ba2b92f544
We ourselves told about the planning project SmartBed Blekinge, funded by Vinnova in the announcement of test beds for environmental technology. Together with the Business, Blekinge Wind Power Association, BTH, Energiforsk, EON Energy Distribution, Karlshamn Energy, NODA, Power Circle and Solar Supply, we have conducted a preliminary study in which we explore the possibilities of creating a test bed for energy storage. We wanted feedback on the proposals for future design of test bed that we presented, so we let the participants discuss in small groups where the results then reported. The application for the design of the test bed must be submitted to Vinnova latest on 19th of June .
